Consulting
Wisdom and clarity, earned in the field
I take on a small number of consulting engagements each year, choosing them selectively to ensure fit and have the time and attention to deliver value. My work sits at the intersection of multiple fields: decision-making under uncertainty, economics, strategy, and planning. I focus my time on projects that are personally interesting, rewarding, and fulfilling. Work that excites me includes topics such as system building (e.g., creativity and problem solving applied to needs of administrative clients, from process development, template building, and creation of tools for workload and revenue projections) and development of funding strategies for nonprofits and government entities (especially ports and harbors).
Over twenty-five years, my work has spanned rate studies for ports and harbors across Alaska and beyond, benefit-cost analyses for federal grant applications (including two $20 million grant awards for maritime facilities), feasibility studies and business plans for varied endeavors, risk analyses, and more.
I am selective in the engagements I accept because, through Hess Mountain Group LLC, I work directly with clients. You won’t be handed off to junior staff, but instead you have access to my experience, expertise, and, importantly, my attention. I’m not a full-service shop, but a focused expert who can take care of specific needs. I almost exclusively work on a fixed-fee basis, so the incentive is always to solve your problem efficiently, not to extend the engagement.
Availability
I am generally available for new consulting engagements from September through May. The summer is usually reserved for time in the field. If your timeline works within those seasons, let’s talk.
If you have a problem that needs deep thinking and detailed analysis, I’d like to hear from you. Contact Me.
