Making
Alongside writing and consulting, I create and make things: photography, digital art, electronic music, video. Some of it is finished, but much more is in progress.
I find that creative outlets pair well with more rigorous analytical pursuits. They help to develop the same critical skills: attention, patience, and willingness to sit with something long enough to understand it and master it.
Here are some of the many facets of my creative side.
Photography
My photography has focused on nature, from the mountains, rivers, and wildlife of Alaska, to the fascinating landscapes of deserts. I shoot on adventures and hikes, walks and runs, aiming to capture the unique aspects of the places I explore, from massive mountains to the tiniest of details in newly formed frost. I aim to capture images that bring me back to the places I have explored.
A growing number of my photos are available as prints or on products through RedBubble.
Digital Art
I’m developing a practice in digital art, from vector designs to illustrations to photo-based compositions. It’s an evolving skill set that challenges me. I enjoy the creative aspect.
As with my photography, a growing number of my works are available through RedBubble.
Electronic Music
Years ago, I made electronic music under the name spatial disparity. After all of these years, I am returning to music as a more active pursuit.
As that past work and my future pursuits become available online, I will link to my musical endeavors here.
Video
I have dabbled in video content creation over the years, through my personal YouTube channel. My intent is to extend and enhance my writing with narrated (and expanded) video versions of my writing in the Field Report. Later, videos will capture my expeditions and adventures, and eventually I hope to develop educational content tied to my books. This work is in an early stage and will grow here as it develops.
